Well we got hit with a lot of snow and cold weather early this year and now right before Thanksgiving we’re getting a slight reprieve!
Don’t hold your breath though it sounds like we’ll be getting a little more snow starting Monday and the temps will start dropping again hitting the teens by next weekend.
Oh well that’s Minnesota! It’s why many of us choose to stay here. The change of seasons is what I like best about Minnesota. We get to enjoy the best of the winter season… cross country skiing, snow shoes, snowmobiling or hiking in the peaceful silence of winter. And of course winter storms … blizzards and heavy snows with strong winds to make you think of of reading one of Jack London’s great novels with Alaska as the backdrop for a wonderful story! There’s nothing better than a walk on the trail in the middle of winter storm.
In a Minnesota Spring we get to experience the glorious burst of greenery and native wildflowers and spring rains falling on new growth in the forests. The lakes and streams shed their icy covers and open up to entice us to pull out our fishing gear, boats and canoes to enjoy another wonderful season change. One of my favorite things to do is hike the trail and look for wildflowers. I also like to get out in my canoe and explore the lake and see what’s popping up under the water. The Lake Wobegon Trails host two marathons in spring … the Lake Wobegon Trails Marathon (running) and the We Walk! Marathon (walking). Both events draw many visitor to the area to enjoy spring on the trails.
Next Summer arrives and we get to enjoy bike rides… we have two early summer rides on the trail… the Caramel Roll Ride the second Saturday in June and of course the Lady Slipper Nature Ride the third weekend along with Spunktacular Days in Avon. What a great way to start the summer! The Central Minnesota Bike Club is in full swing with rides every week to get us out to enjoy the Lake Wobegon Trails along with good company and good food and drink after each ride. Summer brings even more wildflowers and wildlife too. White Tailed deer can be seen with new born fawns and ducklings, goslings and baby loons can be found all over Lake Wobegon Trails Country. Summer on trails … can it get any better?
Fall comes with another season change. This time is a color extravaganza! With all the Aspen, Maples, Oaks, Ash, Cherry, Birch, Sumac and many other trees turning beautiful shades of yellow, gold, red, orange and burgundy we experience one of the best seasons of all! It makes for a wonderful time to bike or walk the Lake Wobegon Trails and take in the breathtaking beauty of nature. It’s also time to enjoy the Caramel Apple Ride on the Wobegon trails and after the ride enjoy some great Bar-B-Que at the Gillin’ ‘n Chillin’ event in Sauk Center the first Saturday after Labor Day.
And just about any time time you can also enjoy a little wine tasting at Whispering Oaks Winery south of Melrose or visit Hemker Park and Zoo just north of Freeport or check out Panther Distilleries in Osakis for taste of some spirits reminisient of the original Minnesota 13 brew by folks back in the Prohibition Days of the 1920’s.
For now we get to enjoy winter on the trail … so get out and enjoy the trails. Bundle up, grab your skis, your snow shoes, hop on your snowmobile or just get out and hike the trail and enjoy a great season on the Lake Wobegon Trail!
