Update on the Lake Wobegon Trails reconstruction project

Just a quick update on the Lake Wobegon Trail reconstruction….

Albany to Freeport section: The new blacktop is down and they are finishing the shoulders and should be completed by the end of the week and maybe a little sooner. Please use county road 137 (i.e. old highway 52) which rruns parallel to the trail on the north side.

Albany to Holdingford section: The work continues on this section with more blacktop being laid this week and then shoulder work needs to be completed. Work is moving along nicely and hopefully will be completed ahead of schedule! Unfortunately there are not easy detours for this section of the trail so it’s best to avoid using this section until all the work is completed.

The work is progessing nicely and likely will be finished ahead of the June 11th sceduled completion date that is weather dependant.

Please don’t use the trails… as tempting as it may be… to allow the new blacktop to cure completely and to avoid interfering with the trail crews as they work to completed the project.

I know it’s inconvenient to have to detour around the work but …. just think how great it will be to have a blacktopped surface to ride!

So be safe and avoid the construction areas for now and be patient as the work continues.

In the mean time sign up for the Caramel Roll Ride held on Saturday June 13th at www.caramelrollride.com and/or the Lady Slipper Nature Ride on Satuday June 20th at www.ladyslipperride.com.

Happy Trails! Cliff

Trails Maintenance/Reconstruction this Spring

We’re finally getting repairs made to the Albany to Freeport stretch this spring along with additional work on the Albany to Holdingford section. So be aware the trail may be shut down on certain sections between May 11th and June 11th. It should not affect the Lake Wobeogon Trails Marathon and hopefully won’t affect the Caramel Roll Ride either … assuming we have good weather and no delays impacting the work.

For updates on the progress and closures check out the Stearns County website for the Lake Wobegon Trails at
http://www.co.stearns.mn.us/Recreation/TrailsandConditions/LakeWobegonTrail

The parks staff will be updating this site with more information as it becomes available. Here’s the current information regarding the maintenance/reconstruction schedule:

Lake Wobegon Trail Major Restoration Project begins May 11, 2015.

Between May 11 and June 11, 2015 there will be a major trail restoration project on the Lake Wobegon Trail.

Restoration will be done on parts of the trail between Albany and Freeport, between Albany and Holdingford, and to the Morrison County line. Those sections of the trail will be closed to all users when appropriate. The Parks Department will continue to issue updates as the project progresses.

If you have questions you can contact the parks office at 320-255-6172 or email at parkinfo@co.stearns.mn.us

Happy Trails! … Cliff

Business news on the Lake Wobegon Trails!

Lake Wobegon Trails Gallery in Albany MN will be open to the public beginning Monday December 1st 2014.

Jack Evens has been working on creating the gallery in the building he purchased recently. Jack has had this gallery for several years located in Freeport in a unique old barn building located just off the Lake Wobegon Trail.

This new gallery location is next to his photography business, “Ludwig Photography” in Albany, Minnesota. I have had the opportunity to view this new gallery and I think it’s a great new venue for artwork on the Lake Wobegon Trail.

Here’s link to Google Maps with the location of the gallery at

Winter is here… maybe?

Well we got hit with a lot of snow and cold weather early this year and now right before Thanksgiving we’re getting a slight reprieve!

Don’t hold your breath though it sounds like we’ll be getting a little more snow starting Monday and the temps will start dropping again hitting the teens by next weekend.

Oh well that’s Minnesota! It’s why many of us choose to stay here. The change of seasons is what I like best about Minnesota. We get to enjoy the best of the winter season… cross country skiing, snow shoes, snowmobiling or hiking in the peaceful silence of winter. And of course winter storms … blizzards and heavy snows with strong winds to make you think of of reading one of Jack London’s great novels with Alaska as the backdrop for a wonderful story! There’s nothing better than a walk on the trail in the middle of winter storm.

In a Minnesota Spring we get to experience the glorious burst of greenery and native wildflowers and spring rains falling on new growth in the forests. The lakes and streams shed their icy covers and open up to entice us to pull out our fishing gear, boats and canoes to enjoy another wonderful season change. One of my favorite things to do is hike the trail and look for wildflowers. I also like to get out in my canoe and explore the lake and see what’s popping up under the water. The Lake Wobegon Trails host two marathons in spring … the Lake Wobegon Trails Marathon (running) and the We Walk! Marathon (walking). Both events draw many visitor to the area to enjoy spring on the trails.

Next Summer arrives and we get to enjoy bike rides… we have two early summer rides on the trail… the Caramel Roll Ride the second Saturday in June and of course the Lady Slipper Nature Ride the third weekend along with Spunktacular Days in Avon. What a great way to start the summer! The Central Minnesota Bike Club is in full swing with rides every week to get us out to enjoy the Lake Wobegon Trails along with good company and good food and drink after each ride. Summer brings even more wildflowers and wildlife too. White Tailed deer can be seen with new born fawns and ducklings, goslings and baby loons can be found all over Lake Wobegon Trails Country. Summer on trails … can it get any better?

Fall comes with another season change. This time is a color extravaganza! With all the Aspen, Maples, Oaks, Ash, Cherry, Birch, Sumac and many other trees turning beautiful shades of yellow, gold, red, orange and burgundy we experience one of the best seasons of all! It makes for a wonderful time to bike or walk the Lake Wobegon Trails and take in the breathtaking beauty of nature. It’s also time to enjoy the Caramel Apple Ride on the Wobegon trails and after the ride enjoy some great Bar-B-Que at the Gillin’ ‘n Chillin’ event in Sauk Center the first Saturday after Labor Day.

And just about any time time you can also enjoy a little wine tasting at Whispering Oaks Winery south of Melrose or visit Hemker Park and Zoo just north of Freeport or check out Panther Distilleries in Osakis for taste of some spirits reminisient of the original Minnesota 13 brew by folks back in the Prohibition Days of the 1920’s.

For now we get to enjoy winter on the trail … so get out and enjoy the trails. Bundle up, grab your skis, your snow shoes, hop on your snowmobile or just get out and hike the trail and enjoy a great season on the Lake Wobegon Trail!

Happy Trails!
